KCSIE 2026 sets new guidance for safeguarding children online
New government guidance puts child safety at the core for educators
This September, the UK government introduced KCSIE 2026, bringing new and robust statutory safeguarding guidance for the education sector. This is one of the most significant steps towards setting boundaries and standards for the protection of children. This includes online safety, ensuring that it is now a core part of safeguarding steps, and not solely a technology issue.
The new updates address child-on-child abuse, serious violence, mental health, recruitment and information sharing. Most significantly, there is now a much stronger emphasis on online safety risks, including negative and harmful interactions with generative AI and deepfakes.
What this means for education institutes, is that they are now required to pay closer attention to how their filtering and monitoring systems are implemented, reviewed, tested and documented. Introducing technology as part of its safeguarding framework isn’t enough – it is now imperative that they know what and where these technologies are providing protection, where there are vulnerabilities and how fast concerns are flagged and directed to the right responder.
What is KCSIE 2026?
KCSIE 2026 refers to Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026, the statutory safeguarding guidance for schools and colleges in England. It explains how education settings must keep children safe, including expectations around safeguarding policies, staff training, safer recruitment, reporting concerns, managing allegations, and working with external safeguarding partners.
