Why Upgrade to an NSa 2700?

02 February 2021
The SonicWall Network Security Appliance (NSa) 2700 next generation firewall (NGFW) offers medium- to large-sized enterprises industry-leading performance at the lowest total cost of ownership in its class. But what makes it so special? And why should you upgrade from the NSa 2650?
  1. 10 GbE SFP+ support in Gen-7 is better

Benefit: The Gen-7 NSa Series next-generation firewalls support multi-gigabit 10GbE interfaces. These firewalls support three to ten 10GbE interfaces enabling mid-sized and distributed enterprises to support faster data rates for the delivery of bandwidth-intensive applications over longer distances.

Difference: The Gen-6 NSa 2650 does not support 10GbE interfaces while Gen-6 NSa 3650 supports only two 10GbE interfaces compared to Gen-7 NSa 2700’s support for three 10GbE interfaces.
  2. Built-in Storage

Benefit: Increased onboard memory allows for more rules/policies, users, and log messages to be stored on the firewall, simultaneously

Difference:The NSa 2700 (64 GB) has 4x more onboard memory compared to NSa 2650 (16GB).
  3. Higher firewall performance

Benefit: Firewall performance provides maximum volume of traffic that can pass through the firewall –with no additional security services or processes activated. Hence higher value indicates better performance.

Difference: NSa 2700 (5.5 Gbps) offer almost 2 times better performance compared to NSa 2650 (3.0 Gbps).
  4. Fast deep packet (intrusion and threat) inspection performance

Benefit:With increased network bandwidth requirements from IT trends such as apps, video streaming and social media, a faster DPI performance firewall provides a secure network without performance degradation. This enables to block network threats without sacrificing performance, easily eliminate malware, ransomware, data breaches and other intrusions.

Difference: The NSa 2700 (3.4 Gbps) offers significantly faster (more than 3x) IPS performance than the NSA 2650 (1.4 Gbps) and 2 times more threat prevention throughput.
  5. High connection count – per second

Benefit: Maximum Connection Count per second describes the total number of concurrent TCP (transmission control protocol) connections a firewall can handle per second. With the continuing increase in the number of connected devices and user transactions, organizations require higher connection counts and the ability to scan all traffic for threats.

Difference: NSa2700 offers 1.5 times the connection counts and speeds over NSa2650.
  6. High IPSec VPN throughput and site-to-site tunnels

Benefit: The volume of traffic that can pass through a firewall for a user who has connected to the network via an IPSec VPN remote access connection. Remote access solutions are gaining in popularity to adapt to the changing “normal”, as such IPSec VPN ensure that employees (and your data) stay safe no matter where they connect.

Difference: NSa2700 offers up to 2.0 times the VPN throughput and site-to-site tunnels over NSa2650.
  7. SonicOS 7.0 support

Benefit: The Gen-7 NSa series runs on our feature-rich SonicOS 7.0 operating system which features nextgeneration policy engine, advanced security, networking, and management capabilities.

Difference: SonicOS 7.0 support is available on Gen-7 NSa series and not available on Gen-6 series.
  8. TLS 1.3 support

Benefit: As more and more websites and applications switch to TLS 1.3, which is faster and more secure the need for a firewall to support TLS 1.3 becomes critical. TLS 1.3 has several advantages over the older protocols such as TLS 1.2, TLS 1.0 and SSL. It offers several changes that improves performance and security, while eliminating complexities. It is faster, simpler and more secure than the older protocols.

Difference: TLS1.3 support is available on Gen-7 NSa series, while Gen-6 series does not support it. And Gen-7 NSa series offers 2.5 times better TLS/SSL performance over Gen-6 series NSa.
  9. Single pane of glass management

Benefit: The Gen-7 NSa series firewalls integrate seamlessly with SonicWall Switches, SonicWave access points and Capture Client endpoint security to provide unified reporting and management. Gen-7 NSa series firewalls offer true single-pane-of-glass management of Switches, APs and CC as they are directly managed via the firewall.

Difference: Currently only Gen-7 NSa series can be managed via NSM. Gen-6 series are managed via CSC-MA (Capture Security Center-Management & Analytics).
  10. Essential and Advanced Security Service Bundles

Benefit:SonicWall Essential Protection Services Suite provides all essential security services needed to protect against known and & unknown threats. Advanced Protection Services Suite offers Essential Protection Services Suite security along with cloud essential services.

Difference: New Essential and Advanced protection service suites are available only on Gen-7 NSa series, while Gen-6 series supports Comprehensive Gateway Security Suite and Advanced Protection Services Suite bundles.
